Charlie Harper Mural

This mural of American wildlife by Charlie Harper is so happy and organized (today’s aspirational state). It was made in the late 60’s for the John Weld Peck Federal Building at 550 Main Street in Cincinnati.  It looks like an efficient field guide, depicting only the most pertinent visual information for identification of each creature. The graphic arrangement seems random enough to infer a lack of hierarchy in the animal kingdom, and possibly a kind of peaceful coexistence (at least in tile).
Harper’s style is so observant and cheerful and so perfectly suited to mosaic design and public space.
